Going to the Movies

Today we are off to see a movie.  You see CR isn't a big fan of going to the movies, so once a year I get to drag him to a film and usually it's around the holidays.  Last year we saw War Horse and this year we are going to see Lincoln.  Yep, I'm dragging him to the theatre - the only one in town he likes and I don't blame him the seats are so comfortable.  We'll get popcorn and I'm sure it will be fun and hey it fulfills his yearly obligation.

We got snow yesterday, but it's gone now, darn it.  I had intended to take a picture, but I was to slow.  Last night we went to a get together with some of the folks CR used to work with and that was a lot of fun.  Great food and good company.

I've have a long weekend - Friday through Tuesday off and it's been very nice and relaxing.  I'm hoping to hear Monday what the catscan showed, do I, or do I not have a hernia and if I don't then what the heck is wrong with my side.

I haven't got one dog gone picture to show you, sorry.  In the next day or two I've got a couple things in the works so hopefully I'll have something interesting to share and show.

I did take the Christmas decorations down, the few that I put out.  However I always like to leave the snowman quilt out and a couple of snowmen out as well.  After all it's winter and they're so cute to have out for a while.

I can't believe that 2012 is coming to an end, time sure does fly doesn't it.  So do you make resolutions or not??  I used to, but never fulfilled any of them, so mostly I resolve to live the best life I can and try to always be kind to others, with each new year I just reaffirm the kind of person I want to always strive to be.

Happy New Year,

Tarder Sauce

Have you all seen the "Grumpy Cat" - Tarder Sauce??  This cat and the captions on her pictures totally crack me up.  Tarder Sauce even has a facebook page and has been on some of the morning news shows too.  If you haven't seen her and the captions on her pictures, you must check her out.  Guaranteed to give you a good laugh.  Here's one of my favorite pictures that was recently posted.

Merry Christmas Eve.

Countdown ToThe Big Day

Seems like everywhere I look people are counting down to Christmas.  I think if I had kids or if my grandson lived closer I might be more into it too.  Or maybe if I just wasn't so tired from chemo I'd be a little more into it.  But this year I've attacked the holidays like a job of things I must do, tired or not.  So it's kind of taken the fun out of it, on the other hand, everything is done.  I think some years are just like that and others are more relaxed and fun.
Friday I work up at 5:30am to start drinking "berry smoothie" contrast for my 8:30 cat scan.  Really, what fool decided to name it berry smoothie - truly it's weird flavored chalk that is just plain hard to gag down on an empty stomach.  No coffee, no water, no food - just berry smoothie.  It was particularly fun when I stepped outside to leave for the appointment and smelled skunk of all things in the air.  I thought I'd lose it, so I plugged my nose and walked very fast to the car.  All that torture for 10 minutes in the cat scan machine.  Oy Vey!!  I hope to find out after Christmas if I have a hernia or what is going on.
Saturday turned out to be a fun day.  We got up and went to breakfast as usual with our friend Ken, then we went to the grocery store really quick before it got super busy.  My friend Mary came by to borrow a couple of baking pans - my Christmas tree bundt pan and then my mini loaves pan.  Mary is such a great friend and she loves to cook and bake too, so it's fun to share recipes and pans with her as well as just getting together for lunch and chats which we sometimes don't have enough time to do as much as we'd like.
This past week we received a box from a good friend and in it were these fabulous cookies, I mean to tell you I couldn't stay out of them and since CR loved them too, I got the recipe.  They are a Cranberry, White Chocolate Shortbread cookie and they are to die for.  If you're interested in the recipe, you can find it HERE.  That plate the cookies are on is a really cute Santa plate that my good friend Cathy gave to me and of course I just love it and had to use it!!

Later in the day on Saturday, my good friend Kelly - who also taught me to quilt, came by for a wonderful visit and brought this amazing plate of her homemade fudge.  I tell you Kelly makes the absolute best fudge I have every tasted.  I've never been able to make fudge so I don't even try, and most fudges I could care less about, but Kelly's fudge is so delish it's all I can do not to attack the whole plate at once.  Kelly is an amazing quilter and what I think is so totally cool about her is her passion for it and how she teaches others - it's a true gift that she passes on and I will always be so grateful that she passed it on to me.

Of course a good day couldn't just stay good, it has a low note.  CR has battled a cold for 2 weeks and he's been so extremely careful not to pass it on to me - he wouldn't even kiss me because my immune system is low right now.  Well I got it anyhow.  It seems to mostly be a really stuffy head and a tad bit of a sore throat, so I'm self medicating to try to keep it from getting worse and of course lots of water to try and flush those germs out.  CR felt so bad, but I told him I probably got it from a customer at the salon, not him.  I touch money and such all day when I work, who knows what you can pick up when you work with the public, germs are everywhere.
Well I'm all ready for Christmas, it's low key around here.  I work 9 to 2 on Monday so the kids could have Christmas Eve off with their families.  We picked up some wonderful Tamales for have for Christmas Eve dinner and then CR is making his fabulous Lasagna for Christmas Day dinner.
So what are your plans and are you all ready for the big day??
Merry Christmas and Hugs,

Lazy Sunday's

A lazy Sunday, well weekend was had by all at our house.  Friday was my last chemo till Feb, hooray!!  I saw a surgeon about a possible incisional hernia, but won't know much till after Christmas as I have a catscan on Friday and probably won't hear from the doc till the following week.  So I had a lazy, lots of naps, Christmas movie marathon sort of weekend.  It was very nice, I over did the last 2 treatments and by this treatment I was in bad shape and exhausted.  I'm still not 100%, but I'm a lot better than I was last week by finally listening to my hubby and my body and resting.

I did a whole lot of baking and forgot to take a single picture.  I made Pumpkin Choc. Chip bread, Pumpkin Scones that rival what Starbucks sells, and 3 different biscotti's.  I also made a dark chocolate cake and sugar cookies for my Urologists office and took that up to them on Friday.  Much of the goodies I made went to friends and family.  So everything has been packed up and shipped and enjoyed (I hope) and I am done for the season.

We are planning a quiet Christmas and having lasagna for dinner.  I will work Christmas Eve 9 to 2 (we close at 2) and give the kids the day off to be with their families.  Then they can work New Years eve and I'll take that off.  No plans, but a nice long weekend for sure.

How are your Christmas plans shaping up and do you have your shopping done??  Not much time to finish if you don't.  Luckily all the shopping I need to do is done and has been done for a while now.

This and That

Yesterday was my 2nd of the 3 chemo treatments.  Ugh, it's kicking my hiney and I haven't done a darn thing all day but sit around and nap.  Mentally I'd like to be doing more, but physically I am just not up to it.  I finally decided to talk to my doctor yesterday about the incision area where they removed my kidney almost 2 years ago, well heck I might have a hernia.  So after my chemo treatment next Friday I'll see a general surgeon across the hall from my Urologist and we will figure out what is going on and a path forward.  I mean really, one more thing, geesh!!

Thought I'd share some pictures with you.  The first one is Scotchie sitting on CR's lap, getting a belly rub and I love the back paw resting up on the table.  Isn't he cute the way he's looking up at his Dad!!

Last night as I was reclining in the misery of the chemo affects, both Maddie and Chanceman decided I needed them to be on the recliner with me to give me comfort.  I must say while they were comfortable, I was getting leg cramps to accommodate them, ha ha.

Since we don't have a Christmas Tree I decided we needed some type of lights to cheer the place up and I found this strand of large, illuminated snowflakes to hang.  I rather like them, it makes the house more festive.  With the chemo, I need all the festive I can get this year.

Our friend Ken was in Puerta Vuerta Mexico this past week and had a picture painted for us of our two cats under umbrellas on the beach.  Isn't this so cute!!  The artist is Marisa Zepeda who paints under the bridge at Isla Cuale.  He had trouble conveying the color of Chanceman but I think he did a good job and we love the painting.

Did I mention that I got my Christmas present early??  I decided I wanted a pair of black Uggs, so while we were at the beach, we found a shop that sold them, and CR bought them for me.  I've been wearing them to death, they are just so comfortable and warm.

So what are you busy doing to prepare for the holidays??  Tomorrow I plan to get some baking done come hell or high water as my Grams used to say.

A Cat Blanket and some Decorations

Who needs a lap blanket or quilt when you have a cat to give you a hot flash, I mean warm you up on a warm winter night, haha.

A few Christmas Decorations.  Not much out this year but a little bit to make it festive.  I do miss the lights of the tree!

Not Much to Say Today

Can you believe I don't have much to yammer on about today.  Go figure.  Having a bit of the "chemo flu" so I've been kind of out of it for a couple of days.  1 round of chemo done, 2 more to go.  So with that said I am going to post pictures of our time on the beach - Cannon Beach, Oregon to be exact.  We had some storms and some beautiful weather too.  Enjoy!!

Good to be Home

Ah, it's good to be home, yet sad to leave the beach behind.  We got there and a couple days later there was a huge wind and rain storm.  The highway into Seaside was flooded, the highway east to Portland was closed due to downed trees, it was a mess and we had NO electricity, which means no way to make coffee.  Oh the travesty of it all!!

By Thanksgiving it was dry and rather nice.  We walked the beach and really enjoyed our time there.  We only had one really rainy day after the big storm and that was on Friday.  We decided to drive south to Karla's Smokehouse in Rockaway beach - owner owned and operated, by Karla, for 48 years and the best smoked fish you will ever eat.  Then we went further south to Tillamook to the Cheese Factory.  Oh god I love cheese curds.  For those of you who've never eaten a cheese curd, here is the Wikipedia definition:  Cheese curds are little known in locations without cheese factories because they should ideally be eaten within hours of manufacture. Their flavor is mild, with about the same firmness as cheese, but with a springy or rubbery texture. Fresh curds squeak against the teeth when bitten into, a defining characteristic, due to air trapped inside the porous material.  If you ever get the chance, please give them a try.  They are so delicious!

Oh before I forget, we purchased an old fashioned perk on the stove, stainless steel coffee pot.  It seems that every year we go to the beach, there's a huge storm, we lose electricity and wham - no coffee.  The stove is propane so I can cook and we have battery power for lights, etc, but the coffee pot is a no go, so now we are covered, phew, what a relief!!

Right now I'm busy putting things away, doing laundry, dusting and getting the house in order so I can put a few Christmas decorations out and preparing for my chemo appt this Friday.  Sure hoping that the chemo doesn't affect me as much this time as it did last time, but it's working so I won't complain!!

I'll leave you with a cute picture of the ever helpful Scotchie - he's been very helpful with the laundry as you can see.

I hope to get all the photos I took on vacation uploaded this weekend and share them with you all soon!!

Oh one more thing, my friend JJ over at The Fifty Factor is having a wonderful Give Away, please go visit her blog and enter for a chance to win a gorgeous ornament!!

Good News to be Thankful For!!

Yesterday was my 3 month checkup for my Bladder Cancer and I was Tumor Free, HOORAY!!  I have 3 more weeks of Chemo starting 11/30.  Then I have one more 3 month check up with chemo in February and then I go to a 6 month check up/chemo schedule.  How exciting is that, I'm almost there.  And despite the side effects I am tolerating the chemo well.  So for all of that I feel very blessed and Thankful!!

We are off to Cannon Beach tomorrow for our 30th Thanksgiving there.  As always we are excited to spend our holiday at the beach.

Happy Thanksgiving and Happy Stitches and Hugs,

Gingerbread Biscotti

I did it.  I've always wanted to make biscotti, but for whatever reason was a tad afraid to try it.  So today I made Gingerbread Biscotti.  I love the gingerbread biscotti that comes out at Starbucks this time of year and I figured it was time to try and make my own - which I must say is even better!!

Biscotti is not hard to make, I don't know what was holding me back.  You can be sure I'll be making more and trying different flavors.

I might get wild and dip some of it in chocolate, but truthfully it's good just as it is.

We are getting ready for our annual trip to Cannon Beach for Thanksgiving, but before that I have my 3 month cancer checkup this coming Wednesday and then 3 more weeks of chemo when the doctor says I'm tumor free!!

Veterans Day

Here in the states we celebrate Veterans Day and we can't thank them enough for their service to our country and our freedom.  My Hubby CR and his brother Doug both served in the United States Air Force and my Aunt Jean, Uncle Carl and Uncle Jim all served proudly in the United States Marine Corp.

So today:  Freedom Isn't Free ~ Honor Our Heroes gratefully acknowledges the service, dedication and patriotism of all of our veterans. We THANK YOU for the freedom we enjoy and the sacrifices you and your families have endured to defend that liberty.

Don't forget to Vote!!

I voted and I'm proud of it.  I vote every election that I can and feel it's my duty as an American.  I don't care who anyone votes for, I just care that you exercise your right to do it - it's important!!

Hitting the Window

This weekend we had the prettiest little bird hit our living room window.  Something about our birdbath and something startling the birds makes some of them fly into the big window.  And this poor little bird did just that after her bath.  She rested on the deck for a bit and then was able to fly up to a tree branch where she stayed for quite a while.

Some friends helped me to identify this little bird as a Cedar Waxwing Hen.  Evidently the males have a spot of red on their wings.  Doesn't she have an interesting face.  And I love the tip of yellow on her tail.

Been having fun in the sewing room, but no pictures taken to share at the moment.

I'm loving my new work schedule of Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, 9 to 2pm.  I would however like to find something that I could perhaps work from home and do, after the first of the year I have a couple of things to look into, for now my schedule suits me and I have another tumor check up coming up, trip to Cannon Beach for Thanksgiving and then 3 weeks of chemo, if I'm tumor free,  to get through before any major changes can be made.

Getting There

Well I've caught up on my blog reading - finally.  And I worked a shorter day today which was wonderful, I actually have had time to get more things done than normal and tomorrow I don't work, so I think I'll be sewing and having a fun day.  I think this 3 day a week schedule will be just right for me.

CR and I went wine tasting with our friends Cathy and Bob yesterday.  We had a great time and the one winery in particular had the best wines - I mean every wine we tried was absolutely delicious.  So we joined their wine club.

It's been almost to warm here today.  Last week it was damp and chilly and then today it's 70 degrees and I put my capri's away - think I'll have to drag the out for wearing a little while longer.  I was working away at the tanning salon today and about died I was so hot.

Thought I'd share some more pictures from North Carolina.  These are of the old Episcopal Cemetery in Edenton, NC with graves dating back to the 1800's.  I love old cemeteries, they fascinate me.  And since it's almost Halloween, well, why not share a few grave stones.  It was interesting to me that some graves were above ground.
